Ali R. Salman, M.D., is an ophthalmologist, retina specialist & vitreoretinal surgeon at The Retina Group of Washington. Dr. Salman’s professional journey began at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was admitted to the Guaranteed Admission program for medical school. He graduated from the Honors College, summa cum laude, with a degree in biomedical engineering and a minor in Chemistry. He went on to complete his medical degree at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. During this time, he received numerous scholarships and accolades.
His post-graduate journey began with an internship at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. This was followed by a residency in ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic, consistently ranked the #1 hospital in the country. During his time at Mayo, he served as Chief Resident and was elected to the Mayo Clinic Resident Leadership Academy. Dr. Salman went on to complete a high-volume, two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at Retina Consultants of Minnesota, during which time he was awarded the VitreoRetinal Surgery Foundation Research Award and served as a sub-investigator for numerous clinical research trials.
Dr. Salman has presented at multiple national and international conferences, published research manuscripts in numerous prestigious journals, and co-authored two textbook chapters.
Dr. Salman is passionate about serving those less fortunate, having spent a decade on the leadership team of a nonprofit organization that repurposes medical supplies for use in disadvantaged areas across the globe. During his tenure, his team was able to expand operations and send numerous containers filled with life-saving medical equipment to underprivileged populations across three different continents. During the COVID pandemic, he led the organization to supply much-needed personal protective equipment (PPE) to local medical facilities in Virginia as well as across the country.
Dr. Salman is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). He is bilingual (English and Arabic), and is licensed to practice in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. When not caring for patients, Dr. Salman enjoys travel, soccer, cars, and spending time with family and friends.
