Dr. Bavinger is an ophthalmologist, retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon at The Retina Group of Washington. Upon completing his undergraduate degree at Stanford University, Dr. Bavinger continued his education earning his medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School. He then completed an internship in internal medicine at the Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk CT and his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania Scheie Eye Institute in Philadelphia. Dr. Bavinger was then selected by Emory Eye Center in Atlanta to complete a fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery.
Dr. Bavinger is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Robert I. Goldsmith Ophthalmology Award from the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan as well as a Verizon Foundation Grant for development of a medical device he created as a medical student. In addition to authoring over 15 articles in peer reviewed journals such as Retina, Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, and Retinal Cases & Brief Reports, Dr. Bavinger has also presented at national meetings including the American Diabetes Association Annual Meeting, The Washington Retina Symposium, and the Atlantic Coast Retina Conference, where he was awarded the best resident case presentation.
Dr. Bavinger is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
When not caring for patients, Dr. Bavinger enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter and is an avid tennis player, cook, golfer, and radio-controlled airplane enthusiast.
