Jiwei Sheng, MD is an ophthalmologist, retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon at The Retina Group of Washington. Upon completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, College Park, Jiwei first joined RGW as an ophthalmic technician. In addition to providing excellent patient care with the RGW team, he received mentorship from inspiring retinal surgeons who encouraged his own pursuit of a career in ophthalmology. He then went on to receive his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. His training continued with a transitional year internship at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, MA, where he was honored with the Clinical Excellence Award. Dr. Sheng then completed his residency in ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine/Cullen Eye Institute in Houston, TX, followed by his fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the prestigious UCLA/Jules Stein Eye Institute and was awarded the Abe Meyer Memorial Fellow.
Dr. Sheng has authored several publications in peer reviewed journals including Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, Ophthalmology Retina, Survey of Ophthalmology, Retinal Cases and Brief Reports, and Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. He actively attends international meetings and has presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). He has been sponsored as an AAO Advocacy Ambassador by the Retina Society and is passionate about promoting ophthalmic care and access for patients across the country. He is excited to serve the DMV community and advancing medical education and surgical training.
Dr. Sheng is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) and is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Fluent in both English and Mandarin, he is licensed to practice in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. When not caring for patients, Dr. Sheng enjoys playing basketball, traveling, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with his family and his dog Chadwick.
