Dr. Minarcik began his academic work at the University of California in San Diego where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors. He then became commissioned as a Naval Officer, and went on to earn his degree in Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. and to be inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. His post-doctoral work included an internship in Transitional Medicine and a residency in Ophthalmology at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. Dr. Minarcik had a variety of experiences as a military physician, including training as a Dive Medical Officer, working as a physician for the US Navy SEALs and acting as the department head of Ophthalmology for two years at the Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan. He completed his training in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery with The Retina Group of Washington.
Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology—and licensed in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.—Dr. Minarcik is affiliated with Washington Hospital Center, Inova Fairfax and Fair Oaks Hospitals and Friendship Surgery Center. He is a member of several professional and academic societies/organizations and serves as a clinical instructor of ophthalmology residents at several local hospitals. He has enjoyed taking part in humanitarian medical missions and is fluent in Spanish.
Dr. Minarcik has participated in numerous research projects and contributed to a number of academic publications. He recently authored a Retinal Physician front page article on diabetic retinopathy laser treatments. At recent international meeting of the American Society of Retina Specialists, he presented a scientific research paper investigating innovative techniques for complex retinal detachment repair.
