After graduating with honors from the University of Virginia with a degree in Biochemistry, Dr. Sanders went on to receive his medical degree from Yale University. An internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital was followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, where he was chosen Co-Chief Resident. He then completed a fellowship in Vitreo-retinal Diseases and Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School, during which time he was selected as the Chief Fellow and worked as a Research Associate.
Upon finishing his retinal training at Harvard, Dr. Sanders joined RGW, where he has since remained. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is licensed throughout the DMV area. He is affiliated with the Georgetown University Hospital, Washington Hospital Center, Children’s Hospital, and Howard University School of Medicine. He has clinical professorships at both Georgetown University and Howard University medical schools. Dr. Sanders has served as Chief of the Retina Service at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center since 2001.
Dr. Sanders has fashioned a career in education and research with RGW, developing a national reputation. He is well published, having more than 50 papers, articles and presentations to his credit, and has lectured nationally and abroad. He has served as an investigator/sub-investigator in numerous studies of new retinal treatments, including being a principal investigator for the landmark Lucentis® treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Sanders has also filled leadership roles for—and is still active in—many local and national professional societies and organizations. In addition he has been consistently recognized for his clinical skills, as evidenced by a number of professional honors:
